Gene-Environment Interaction in Myopia

Thanks to Dr. Michael Margareten for pointing us in the direction of this research on myopia from Columbia University just published in PLOS Genetics.  Here is the news release from Columbia.  Even if the environmental contribution is “only” a 30% factor, that is huge in terms of genes/genetic network and environmental interaction!

  1. I’m not buying the genetics as a major factor. For one thing, coincidence does not mean cause. What is the prevalence of this gene in the general population? In hyperopes? For another, why does every study completely ignore nutrition and eye health/physical development?
