Eco-Optics Part 3

In part 2 we introduced the idea of optic flow while driving, and a tutorial of sorts from the CNS Vision Lab.  One slide in particular captures the essence of dynamic translational and radial optic flow vectors as follows.

Optic Flow Undulating

What are the component elements of the visual system that allows us to process optic flow cues effortlessly and subconsciously?  As much as Gibson put ecological optics on the map, F.A. Miles is a vision scientist whose work sheds considerable light on a visual model for optic flow that is of particular interest to us.  Sue Barry and I have been working on applying the work of Gibson and Miles in our presentation at the upcoming ICBO meeting.
