Irritable Eye Syndrome (IES)

Practice Update is the joint venture from Elsevier between ODs and MDs where we feature articles once weekly that capture our fancy.  This week’s feature is IES, which should strike a familiar cord from IBS.

The literature on this fascinating mind-body connection is mostly in gastroenterology literature, so one might say that you have to develop a gut feeling for this, pardon the pun.  Yet that is true in all of healthcare practice these days, where one has to temper clincal data with instinctual feelings and experiences.  This particular article was published in the journal Ocular Surface, and you can take a look at its abstract here.

Mind-Eye

Uveitis has previously been associated with IBS, and this new article signals the importance of transdisciplinary considerations in disorders of the mind and body at the intersection of irritable eyes.  There may be a number of common mediators including stress, inflammatory, and/or autoimmune factors.
